13 Reasons Why

Hey there everyone! If you've been on the internet lately, you've probably heard of 13 Reasons Why. Recently, it's been made into a Netflix series. I've heard good things about it, but I have not actually watched it yet. This post will not contain any spoilers from the Netflix series. However, it may contain spoilers from the book which may or may not cross over to the Netflix series. If this isn't something you want to read, please don't. Thanks and enjoy the post if you choose to!

So, 13 Reasons Why was written by Jay Asher and was published in 2007 by RazorBill which is an offshoot of Penguin Teen. It follows the story of Hannah Baker specifically through the eyes of Clay after her suicide. A while after Hannah committed suicide, Clay received a box with seven tapes in them, each labeled Side A and Side B. They contain the thirteen reasons that led to Hannah committing suicide. Actually, you can listen to parts of them on You Tube through Hannahsfriend. They're really interesting. Back to the plot though! Hannah tells the people receiving the tapes through the beginning of them that they have to pass it on to the next person on the list (sent to the 13 people referenced in the tapes) or the tapes will be released publicly by an unknown person.
I checked this book out of my school library intrigued. I didn't think I'd read it all in one sitting though. It took me about 3 hours to read it and listen to the online tapes. I also did visit the website for the book. Reading it, I rode the emotional roller  coaster with Clay.
13 Reasons Why shows the impact that people have on others. It shows you that even if you think you're just making a joke, you could actually be damaging someone. It points out the darker side of high school students. To me, it really shows the impact upon the community after someone commits suicide. Throughout the book, Clay is distressed by Hannah's assumptions that no one cares about her. He's sad and angry and doesn't really know what to do with those emotions. It really shows that even if you think something is true, it may not be in the minds of many others.
Hannah thinks no one cares. Yet many people do. She just didn't see it. This to me really nails in the idea that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Of course, I know that's said far too much. It's really true though. Looking at everything that happened to Hannah, it makes sense why she would feel the way she did. Honestly, reading it made me feel like it was real. Listening to the tapes and looking at the website, it made me step back for a moment. It reminded me of so many people. I hope you read it. Of course, be careful.
If you know that reading about suicide upsets you, please don't. Rape is also mentioned among many other things. Please be careful.

I hope you enjoyed this post and that you will go read 13 Reasons Why! Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the next post.
