Undertale Routes: Genocide AKA No Mercy

Hey there! Welcome to my blog! What will be in the following post you ask? The short answer is that this is the first post in a 3 part series  about the three main different endings that occur in Undertale and some extra facts related directly to those different endings. The long answer is what's in this post! Let's get started then! :) It goes without saying that there will be spoilers ahead so tread carefully those of you who don't like spoilers! Note: I might alternate between saying run and route. They mean the exact same thing, it's just that different people like to use different words!

Genocide Run (AKA No Mercy Route)

This run includes pretty much what it sounds like: death. In order to complete a Genocide run, you need to kill all the bosses and mini-bosses although the secret bosses (such as So Sorry and Glyde) don't count. You also need to reach a certain number of kills per area. You will know when you have reached it by the SAVE points. When you have reached the required number of kills in that particular area, the save point will simply give you the message "Determination." You can keep up with your kill count by the count that will appear in the SAVE points before the required kills have been met. You have to kill the required number of monsters before approaching the boss in that area otherwise you are put into a Neutral run. The number of kills and the bosses which will be in parethenses are as follows for each area:
  • Ruins - 20 kills (Toriel)
  • Snowdin - 16 kills (Papyrus)
  • Waterfall - 18 kills (Undyne the Undying)
  • Hotland/Core - 40 kills (Mettaton NEO)
  • New Home - no kills required (Sans)
In addition to killing the bosses, you also have to kill the mini-bosses. The secret bosses (such as So Sorry and Glyde) do not count. All mini-bosses (excluding Snowdrake and including Shyren) can be encountered even after the kill count has been exhausted which can be used to get extra EXP. Once you kill a certain boss, you are no longer able to abort the Genocide route unless you restart from the title screen.  The required monsters in order up until the point of no return are as follows:
  • Toriel
  • First Snowdrake (does not have to be killed the first time it is encountered but must be killed before kill count is exhausted)
  • Doggo
  • Lesser Dog
  • Dogamy and Dogaressa
  • Greater Dog
  • Papyrus
  • Shyren
  • Glad Dummy
  • Monster Kid (you can't kill them ,but attempting to do so will trigger the fight with Undyne the Undying which is required for the Genocide route)
  • Undyne the Undying
  • Royal Guards
  • Muffet
  • Mettaton NEO (once you kill Mettaton, you are no longer able to abort the Genocide route unless the aforementioned measures are taken)
There are different things that result in aborting a Genocide run depending on where you abort. If you abort the Genocide route at the fight with Papyrus, you are only able to hang out with him as you aren't able to flirt with him. At Waterfall, Sans thanks you. Sparing Monster Kid results in you fighting Undyne normally. If you go past the point of no return, you can reset with no side effects as long as you have not given a final answer to Chara. After the Genocide route has been completed, Chara destroys the world. What happens next is best described by the Undertale wikia page.

"Upon relaunching the game after Chara destroyed the world, the game now only has a black screen with the sound of howling wind. The inputs do nothing here. There are no menus. No buttons, nothing. The world is no more.
  • After waiting approximately 10 minutes in this screen, Chara notes the player's return to the game. They remind the player that they're the one responsible for the world's destruction, observe that the player cannot accept that they caused it to happen, and then remark coldly that they think they're above consequences.
    • If the player affirms by selecting 'YES,' Chara will simply say, "Exactly."
    • If the player selects 'NO,' then Chara questions why the player even is in the void.
  • No matter which option is chosen, Chara then states that a compromise could still be made. They state that the player has something that they desire, and offer to restore the world if the player surrenders it. If the player says "YES", Chara reveals what they want from the player: their SOUL. If the player agrees, Chara states that the deal has been made, and the game closes once again but appears to boot up normally the next time it is opened. The player's SAVE file is deleted, and the game is now permanently altered. From that point onwards, any future playthroughs of the True Pacifist Route and the Genocide Route become known by fans as the "Soulless True Pacifist" and "Soulless Genocide" Route. Unusually, this does not affect the Neutral Route endings at all.
    • If the player chooses to decline these terms, Chara will end the conversation, forcing the player to wait an additional 10 minutes before having the deal re-offered."
My personal opinion is that Genocide isn't a good route to take at all. I prefer the Pacifist route to the either the Neutral route or the Genocide route. Until next time...........
